Assistant General Counsel

The Assistant General Counsel is responsible for implementing the legal strategy developed by the General Counsel; for providing operational support to implement policy and procedure across departments; and for executing legal tasks necessary to the smooth operation and risk management of the Company. While the Assistant General Counsel will maintain primary focus on implementation of legal strategy and compliance, the position will also be a key operational support and will have a substantial role in aiding the coordination and execution of business strategy across teams.

Key Responsibilities Include

  • Legal Strategy & Regulatory Guidance

    • Analyze federal and state statutory and regulatory requirements and provide strategic counsel to guide corporate decision-making and operations.

    • Monitor legal and policy developments, proactively identifying implications for business functions and recommending policy updates.

    Corporate Policy & Contract Management

    • Lead and manage the Company’s contracting processes, including drafting, negotiating, and monitoring of contracts.

    • Maintain contract compliance tracking systems and ensure key deadlines and renewal dates are met.

    • Support the development and revision of internal documents such as HR policies, employee handbooks, and compliance materials.

    HR & Operations Support

    • Oversee HR legal processes, including onboarding, policy acknowledgment, and terminations, with attention to multi-state compliance and registration.

    • Lead biennial salary surveys and related compensation compliance efforts.

    • Provide guidance on employment-related claims, IP matters, and other general legal issues.

    Insurance & Risk Management

    • Manage annual review and renewal of the company’s insurance portfolio (GL, E&O, WC, Cyber, etc.).

    • Monitor legal trends and requirements affecting insurance coverage and risk exposure.

    Security & Compliance Framework

    • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to develop and implement security-related procedures aligned with industry best practices and regulatory requirements.

    • Conduct periodic audits and updates of compliance and training documentation.

    Business Development & Proposal Support

    • Contribute to the legal analysis and preparation of responses to RFPs, ensuring thorough research and compliance with relevant legal considerations.

    IP Strategy

    • Assist in shaping and executing a proactive intellectual property strategy, including protection and enforcement measures.

    Special Projects

    • Take on special assignments as directed, often involving cross-functional collaboration and strategic planning.

Requirements

  • Current license to practice law in New Mexico

  • 2-5 years of experience practicing law in New Mexico

  • Solid grasp of general principles of corporate, contract, employment, and intellectual property law

  • Excellent research, writing, and communication skills

Job Specifications and Pay

This job is a full-time, non-exempt position working approximately 40 hours a week. Our headquarters is in Santa Fe, New Mexico, with satellite offices across the United States. For the ideal candidate, this is a hybrid position that will require an on-site presence several days a week. The candidate will need to have a functional at-home workspace with reliable internet service and the ability to travel to work in Santa Fe on a regular basis.
